DBT Skills Online Group with Cara Miles

What is a DBT Skills Training group?

You will learn a new skill or skills each week. The skills are designed to help you learn to manage emotions, improve relationships, and cope with challenging situations effectively. Each week you will be encouraged to practice the skill(s) taught and invited to share your experience the following week.

Groups will start with a brief mindfulness practice followed by the opportunity to share your experience of practising the skills over the previous week. Then we will learn the new skill(s) and finally set some homework. Your home practice is designed to give you the opportunity to practice the skills you are learning - this is the best way to make sure you understand them and will be able to use them when you need them!

What will I learn?

You will learn ALL core DBT skills.

This includes the following modules:

  • Mindfulness: Focusing on the present moment without judgment, helping you become aware of thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. (5 weeks)

  • Distress Tolerance: Learn skills to cope with crises and tolerate distressing emotions without making situations worse. (6 weeks)

  • Emotion Regulation: Develop strategies to understand, manage, and change intense emotions. (6 weeks)

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: Learn effective communication and relationship-building skills to handle interpersonal challenges and assert your needs effectively (6 weeks)

Who is it for?

If you feel that you would benefit from learning the skills described above, and would like a supportive space to do that, this is it! You don’t need a diagnosis or a referral to join this group - although, if you have one, that’s okay too. You do need to be willing to learn and have a go at using the skills you’ll be learning each week. Nothing will change if you don’t change what you are doing.

If you are already working with an individual therapist, you can continue to see them while you complete the program. We will discuss your decision and options as well as if this group is the right fit for you during your 1:1 assessment appointment. You are also welcome to book a free 20-minute consultation here to ask any questions you have about joining the group.

DBT was originally designed to help people with chronic suicidality. Since then, it has been validated as a treatment for a range of disorders including ADHD, Depression, PTSD and Binge Eating Disorder. Skills training is just one component of a full DBT program.

Please note: This group is not able to manage severe or complex presentations. This is not a comprehensive DBT program. If you experience severe or complex mental health difficulties we recommend you seek an in-person, comprehensive DBT program where you have access to 1:1 appointments, phone coaching as well as a skills training program.

Skills training is not the appropriate space to address urgent or crisis-related issues. Please use local supports including an individual therapist, your local doctor and emergency services as required.

I’m interested, what now?

  • First up, we will have a 1:1 assessment session (60-90mins)

    • During that appointment:

      • We’ll discuss your goals for the program

      • We’ll identify the behaviours you want to change

      • We’ll go over your history and also get an understanding of where you’re at now

      • We’ll make sure this program has the right level of support for your current needs.

    • This appointment must be held BEFORE 30th of April.

  • Group starts on Thursday, 2nd of May. The full program will run for 23 weeks live on zoom. We will be a small group and will meet each week to learn the DBT skills. You will have weekly home practices to help you implement what you’re learning.

  • Each session is 2 hours long. Starting at:

    • 6pm AEDT (Melbourne/Sydney) time (7pm in summer)

    • 9am UK Time (8am in winter)

    • 4pm Hong Kong/Malaysia/Philippines/Singapore

  • DBT groups are like an educational group or class - it’s not a sharing or process-oriented group. This helps keep the space safe for everyone. Each week we will get started with a short mindfulness practice and then we will review the homework. Each week, group will follow the same format:

    • We will begin with a short mindfulness practice

    • Then we will review homework - share your homework, hear how others practised the skills over the week

    • Learn the new skill(s) for the week

    • Receive homework (HINT: it’ll be practising the new skill(s) you’ve just learnt!)

  • The group will be interactive and live. You will be able to ask questions and engage in discussion as we go!

Book a 20 minute call to ask anything else you’d like to know to help you decide. We’ll meet over zoom at a time that’s convenient for you.

NB: This group is not a substitute for individual therapy. It is also not a comprehensive DBT program. If you are experiencing thoughts about ending your life this group is not appropriate for you, instead, we recommend you seek an in-person comprehensive DBT program where you will have access to 1:1 appointments, phone coaching as well as a skills training program. This is a skills training group - think of it like a weekly class where you will learn new skills to help you manage your life's stress, emotions and interactions.
